dell function button

i recently bought a dell latitude d610.I use a data projector with it.When i
first started to use function and f8 to toggle between screen outputs, i got
icons showing me which output it was on ie. laptop screen, external monitor
, or both.now i dont. even though it does toggle between them.Also function
and f10 no longer opens the dvd tray like it used to,and function f3 doesnt
show the battery levels either.
the function button still works with the bluetooth and wireless though.
Any ideas???
