HELP! Hard Drive Gone Down - Is Surgery Possible?

Last night one of my hard drives went down together with several
gigabites of un-backed up files (it was actually my back-up drive). I
couldn't access any data and the drive arm inside just seemed to
'clicking' back and forth a couple of times every second.
The drive is a 250GB Western Digital WD2500JB inside a LaCie external
box. I spent hours trying to get it to re-mount but with no success.
Many of the files were digital photographs I need for an up-coming
exhibition and with the drive no longer in guarantee, I decided to take
it apart to have a look inside - to see if there was any obvious
mechanical fault.
I have a basic knowledge of electronics - and know the dangers of
opening a hard drive, but I figured I had nothing left to loose and was
very careful to avoid dust falling onto the disk. Everything mechanical
seemed fine, which I expected as the drive has had very little use -
and as it went down so quickly, I assumed the problem must be
electronic.
That being the case, I have been considering buying an identical drive
(Ebuyer is selling them for seventy quid) and replacing the electronics
board. Can anyone advise me on the viability of this - whether this is
going to be where the fault lies and what problems I am likely to
encounter...?
Has anyone attempted this kind of open-heart surgery before?
Any help/advice would be gratefully received...
TIA,
Nigel
