Re: Kubuntu app title bar problem

I've just installed Kubuntu 11.10 on a laptop (which has the Intel
855GME graphics chipset) and the desktop looks fine except for one
problem: The title bar of the apps appears displaced to the right and
stretched. The title bar buttons do not work at their apparent
position, but are actually functional in the correct position
relative to the window below and can be found by hunting for the
tooltip popups.

It could be a compositing window manager gone awry for some reason.
Before Unity the GNOME version of Ubuntu used to have a setting for
"Desktop effects", so they may still have a similar option for KDE.
Disabling effects turns compositing off.

KDE 4 does have a "desktop effects" category in the System Settings
application.

However, the problem described by Dave Farrance sounds to me like he'd
be using Compiz rather than KDE's own kwin window manager - I've had
some compatibility issues myself with KDE (3.5) and Compiz in the past -
and in that case, the KDE "desktop effects" settings won't have any
effect. He'd need to get into the Compiz settings to disable them.

It's the dissonance between the title bars of the windows and the actual
size of the windows which leads me to believe he's using Compiz, which
has a window decorator of its own.

On the other hand, there could also just be something terribly wrong
with the "intel" driver.
