It looks as if playing Blu Ray discs is still a bit tricky, and
encrypted ones need to be dumped to HD first (ie I can't see anything on
Google saying that's a thing of the past, it's all automagic now).
You also need a high end CPU for HD video (for H264/AVC anyway) unless
you've got an NVidia 8x00 series or newer card and use VDPAU (still
mostly only available in development versions of video software,
although it may be mainstream in MythTV by now).
Am I right in thinking new OSS ATI drivers are under development which
will include support for hardware video decoding on modern cards? If so
ATI (or Intel once their VA API crystallises) would be a better choice
once they appear, not only to avoid proprietary drivers, but because
someone's written a patch for ATI and Intel which allows the output
frame rate to be subtly adjusted, which makes it easier to sync A/V and
to play direct from a braodcast stream without any issues like tearing
or jerky picture.
