Network setup - Netgear router (non-wireless - supplied by company)
wired to 5 port switch to which is plugged in a desktop running XP, a
Networked printer, a wired facility for one laptop running XP (but also
uses wireless) all in the same room (the office), and a D-Link WAP
which two Toshiba machines access in the room next door(study), one a
Netbook the other a Satellite both (at this time) running Ubuntu 9.04
The scenario that happened this morning has happened before. The Laptop
in the Office was accessing the internet wirelessly, also the laptop in
the study. Suddenly the laptop in the study, although still connected to
the network, lost Internet access suddenly. The Laptop in the office
continued to be able access the internet. I had to RE-SET the router to
get internet access back in the study.
Can anyone suggest a reason why although the machine in study was
connected to the network there was no internet access, while the machine
in the office had internet access, connecting via the SAME WAP?

I'm afraid i'm rather confused about what your exact setup is - your
description isn't easy to follow (and i don't get the bit about the
laptop having a wired and a wireless connection at all) - however, it
sounds like it could be RF interference. That could be strong enough in
one location to affect communications, but not strong enough in the
other. Maybe try changing the router to a different channel.

Sorry about the confusion! What I meant to say is that although there is
a free wired connection on the switch for the laptop in the office, it
generally, (and was at this time) uses wireless instead.
Thanks for the suggestion about RF interference - we live right out in
the wilds and AFAIK there ain't any! In anycase as I said - all works
perfectly OK normally, this just happens occasionally and is quite
frustrating as to why two machines, both accessing the network via the
same WAP, and both connected to the internet, one should drop the
internet connection completely and need a router re-set to get it back,
while the other is happily still accessing the internet via the same
hardware....
