but I still can't see anything like a metapackage or any 173 stuff in
synaptics.

I've also got it now.
Very strange, none of these meta packages showed up intially.
Then I changed repo mirror, still nothing then changed back to the main
server and there they were.
Stilll can't get compiz running but that's another story.
