Has anyone been able to get this to work properly with any Linux distro?

I'm using one as a NAS system in my garage.

The video section seems really strange, and none of the following can
get a sensible result.

64studion 2.1
Debian Etch
Zenwalk 5
Ubuntu 8
Ubuntu Studio 8

My objective was to get a small, semi-portable basic DAW. It's beginning
to look like I've just wasted 250 squids :(

I installed Ubuntu Server and it works perfectly, however I guess that
doesn't help you all that much as you want to run X.

Interestingly I managed to get the latest version of Mandriva to work
reasonably well at the preferred monitor resolution of 1440 x 900. To
my surprise, they provide a RT kernel option and I was able to install
Jack, ZynAddSubFX & Rosegarden from the RPMs without difficulty.

MIDI control comes through the M-Audio MidiSport 2 x 2 via USB, and I
only get xruns when using the most complex voice patches in Zyn.

One problem I currently have is that it seems to ignore ordinary USB
memory sticks :(

Strange, mine recognises a USB hard drive (the one running Ubuntu
Server that is). Since the whole point was to use it as a NAS and I
wanted to use an existing USB drive that was rather important for me.

Unfortunately after working well for 6 months or so it has just
expired, I'm waiting for a replacement from Lambdatek.

It seems it's a software problem of some sort. Other distros (although
with messed up graphics) can see all the USB stuff, but with mandriva
the plugin for using M-Audio's MidiSport works, GtKam can see my camera
but not find any files on it, and there is no automagic opening of a
filer window if I plug in a memory stick or USB drive.

However, as root lsusb correctly identifies all of these, so I don't
know if there is something extra I'm supposed to install (never have to
with any other modern distro) or if something broke when I did the
install :(

Poking around, I found my user was not a member of the USB group, so
set that, but it made no difference.

Here we go, talking to myself. I knew the 'net would get to me
eventually :)

For those who are interested I managed to track this mandriva problem
down, by doing a fresh inch-by-inch install.

Everything worked fine, including the rt kernel and all the extra
audio bits I wanted, until I did a general update. It appears that
mandriva have managed to mix incompatible hal and dbus packages.
Because this is going to be a stand-alone system the obvious answer then
is not to update anything :?
