I look after a "public" PC in our village which is failing to run Skype on
Vista Basic - lots of repeated voice snippets ("stammering" is the best
description I can think of). It's a bottom-end PC (AMD Athlon 3500 I
think), and I suspect that Vista is eating too much processor time to give
Skype what it needs.
So I am looking to set up a USB Memory Key with a basic Linux + Skype
configuration so that the PC could boot into Linux from the Memory Key
when Skype is wanted.
I have no experience of Linux and can't afford the time to learn at the
moment, so I'm looking for something "packaged" (a sort of
DamnSmallLinux+Skype package?) that wouldn't need much tinkering. Any
ideas?

I recently installed Slax http://www.slax.org/ onto a 1GB Memory Stick,
think it only uses about 100MB, but you can add skype straight from the site
while creating slax on you usb stick
http://www.slax.org/modules.php?category=network.
