What do you need fetchmail for that the basic POP fetcher in
Thunderbird can't do?

Well, after having lots of fun trying to copy my messages from
evolution to thunderbird, i cottoned on to doing it via a local IMAP
server. Once i'd set that up, i thought it was a good way to do the
whole thing - i.e., to always keep all email in the standard old way
and let the mailreader open the folders using IMAP. That way, if i
get sick of thunderbird after a trial period, i can go back to
evolution without any hassles.

I started using IMAP a while ago too. You can get mailers like
Thunderbird to fetch mail from your ISP then filter it into IMAP
folders, but then if you do decide to change mailer you have to rewrite
your filters, or duplicate them if you read mail on more than one PC. I
wrote poptoimap to make sure my fetcher/filter would be more compatible
with any IMAP server (and easier to write rules for). I'm tempted to
rework it as a filter I can run on a web server and use UKFSN's IMAP
service instead of localhost, but I'm not away from home enough to make
that really worthwhile.

Could you be more specific?
1) Which specific IMAP server have you installed on your computer?
[UW-IMAP,Cyrus-IMAP,...]
2) Why do not you use fetchmail to fetch messages?
[ fetmail can deliver via procmail script to provide extra filtering ]

I use Cyrus-IMAP. I have started to think it is too much for *personal* use.

We're getting so far off topic that we're off the off-topic topic
now! ;-)

We're so far off-topic we're just about back on-topic for the group :).
