OK, sorry for the delay. I've been disracted by jury service and also I
got hold of fc9 on CDs and tried it, but the same thing is happening.
I loaded in text mode because I couldn't load in graphic mode. When I
tried I got as far as the graphics screen (after it said "loading X
server" I think) - by which I mean the splash screen would part load,
strip of blue across the top and the rest white, while the mouse pointer
becomes stuck in the middle of the screen and won't respond. It just
freezes at this point.
When I got into "root" in text mode and typed "StartX" I similarly
became stuck when the graphics mode started up. I got a screen warning
me about logging on in root mode but couldn't get any further.
I have loaded the thing again (in text mode) and get as far as
"localhost login" but can't now even get into root!
I have an AMD 3000+ cpu and 512 M RAM and a serial HD.
Any advice welcome, and thank you for your patience.
Joseph

Yes, I loaded fc9 in text mode.
Why?
Moreover, I overwrote a perfectly stable
fc6 in the process which I now regret. Have done as you suggested but
the graphical interface doesn't work properly, it hangs, so I guess I'll
have to reinstall. A couple of questions...
You shouldn't *have to* reinstall. This isn't windows! With windows
there's usually no way to fix things like this without reinstalling. With
linux you can usually fix it. However, if you've botched the first
install, it's often a good idea to do it again and get it right this time.
But if you do install, don't use text mode!
What do you mean by the graphical interface hangs? You need to give more
information. What is it actually *doing*?
Did startx work?
Should I reformat the hard drive?
If you 're going to do a complete reinstall, then yes. You can't install
over the top of an already installed system.
How? Should i start network
interfaces? I have a router which has a Windows machine attached and I'd
like them to talk to each other. How do I configure "eth0"? Do I enable
IPv4 or IPv6 support? Do I go for DHCP ot manual?
Do I go for Automatic Neighbour thingy or DHCPv6?
Nope. Ignore all that stuff, it's completely outdated for most
workstation type of purposes now. Use NetworkManager - it does all the
setup for you and it works really well. It should be configured by
default in F9. You should get a network icon in the notification area of
the taskbar. You may have to click on it and select the network option -
but you probably won't. It works for wireless and wired and it will
automatically switch to another network when it needs to. If there's an
ethernet cable plugged in it will use that in preference to any wireless
networks that may be available.
NB When using the Rescue option i get as far as "Your system ismounted
under "/mnt/sysimage if you would like to make your system the root
environment run chroor /mnt/sysimage" but I've had no luck doing this.
What do you mean by "no luck"??? What actually *happens*?
