(Re)Installing Ubuntu on a Thinkpad

Dear All,
I just replaced the hard drive on my ThinkPad R40e. I have the IBM
recovery disks, so was able to restore the hidden partition and XP
install.
Next: Ubuntu. When I used the Live CD to install once before it put
grub on the MBR which knocked out the IBM hidden partition, so I used
the alternate install CD.
Installation went without problems, and I asked for grub to go on /dev/
hda2, which is is where I have mounted /
Restarted. XP only. No sign of Ubuntu.
Booted from the Live CD, quickly and no problem. Ran gparted. /dev/
hda1 is bootable, /dev/hda2 isn't. "Aha" I think "I'll make /dev/hda2
bootable, that'll run grub and I can add XP as a chain load boot". So
I make /dev/hda2 bootable and ...
Nothing.
No operating system.
Bugger, I think. Better undo that, and boot with the Live CD again.
Which won't. Hangs after about five minutes with the capslock light
blinking - which I gather means "kernel panic"
Oh blast.
Has anyone out there got dual boot XP / Ubuntu running on a Thinkpad
with intact hidden partition? I have managed it before, but I had OS/2
installed and used its boot manager - I'd rather not install it just
for this if there's an alternative.
Ian
