If your really looking to replace one then try the 2nd hand market I got
one for £10 and works well its a mustek 1200ub and us self-powered from
the usb lead. I got it from a local computer shop that sells new and used
equipment. You could probably pick up a bargain from freeads or even an
online auction site, or even your local paper. Especially now vista has
screwed everyone as most scanners are "not vista compatible". A couple of
years ago you'd go to argos with £20-£40 and pickup a half decent scanner.
To be honest the main thing that goes in a scanner is the drive cable
they either perish or stretch.
I know argos sell a cannon Lide 25 scanner for £40 but unknown if it will
work with Linux.
If my scanner packs up I'd get another 2nd hand one.
