Is there a news reader in Linux (other than Thunderbird) that will

I have fairly major random problems in accessing news servers on ports
119 (and sometimes on port 563), my ISP has absolutely NO idea why it
happens, and very often the only way onto a news server is via a secured
one on port 563....

Have you tried pan? I've been using it for years and never had much
trouble with it. I've never tried using it the way you want to, but in
the server config section, you can specify the port and put in a username
and password - so i guess it should work for you.
