Re: Suggestions for a box to run ssh port forwarding.

Some months ago this group suggested ssh port forwarding as a solution to a problem I was experiencing. I am pleased to say that this has proved to be highly effective and I would now like to have a dedicated box available to perform this function. The data rates are not high. What is the cheapest box (both purchase price and running cost) for this application, a router running Linux firmware, a NAS box or what?

I posted this question a couple of months ago and received a number of very helpful suggestions. I thought it might be useful to summarise what I have done. I looked at all the suggestions but as low purchase cost was part of the requirement a flashed router seemed the most sensible option. After studying ebay it became apparent that suitable second hand Linksys routers were going for silly money. A bit of research showed that a Buffalo WHR-G54S should be suitable and cost only £25 brand new from ebuyer.com. I then looked at a number of distributions including open-wrt and dd-wrt. I think these would have done the job but didn't appear very polished. I then investigated Sveasoft <http://www.sveasoft.com/>. There simplest router firmware Talisman/basic is now available free of charge. I downloaded, flashed the router and after a small amount of configuration I now have exactly what I wanted. Hope this is useful to someone. Thanks again to all who contributed to the thread.
