In a nutshell though it's on top of a dresser, there's only
one power socket that can be dedicated to the gear, extension leads are
impractical and dotty parents plus inquisitive nephews/nieces are a real
factor!

Yeah, i can completely understand the benefits of not having loads of
bloody cables and power plugs etc! I've had similar setups myself in the
past and anything that reduces the number of power sockets you need is a
good thing on its own - to say nothing of the other benefits of having
things as compact and uncomplicated as possible.

Fortunately i don't have to do such things any more and my life is
considerably easier as a result! ;-) However, i did learn a lot by doing
things that way - even though i mostly did it because i didn't have a
choice that i could afford and that worked with the space i had.

What would be ideal in that situation would be a hardware ADSL modem on a
PCI card (like the old hardware dialup modems, before the advent of the
appalling "winmodem") - but i've never heard of them and i can't imagine
such a thing exists.
