Thanks for all the helpful replies: the suggested list of players and
drivers is just what I needed. I've now found all their sites and made
notes of what will get installed. The references to Livna and atrpms.net
are particularly useful.
I'm more interested in audio than video, so:
- Does anybody use mpd?
- Why is mpd preferable to the player apps apart from not occupying
screen space when its running?
- Which is the better player: Audacious or XMMS?
I'd intended to post this earlier but Thunderbird had a brain fart and
lost almost its entire collection of read posts. I've now made its
deletion policy more conservative. I hope that improves its mind.

Re: OT--problems with windows audio driver ... My use of the computer includes winamp, total recorder, click repair, real player, and youtube and media sites through firefox. ... Now occasionally when I open total recorder and try to start something on it, I get the message, "Audio driver unavailable--a different program is using audio." ... it's not uncommon when I try to open something on youtube not to have any audio even when I've closed the programs that clearly use it. ... Re: Error Code 22 - Uninstalled Drivers for MP3 Player ... It's like I'm going in a circle...reinstalling and rebooting, just to reinstall the drivers again. ... I've even reinstalled it with the disk that was provided with my player to no avail. ... If it "changed to MTP" overnight, my guess is that somehow a generic MTP ...
