No, I think that originally there were concerns with the license and
Schilling, the cdrecord author, did not make cdrecord able to burn dvds
(the dvdpro version he sold to enable it to do that). Thus many distros
rewrote cdrecord to handle dvds. Schilling has altered his stance and AFAIK
he now does supply the dvd burning as part of the regular cdrecord under
the GPL. However, many distros have stuck with the ammended version. Wodim
AFAIK was one of those rewrites by someone on the Debian team, and many
have picked it up. Schilling claims ( see the other posts in this thread)
that that version is poorly supported and pointless now that cdrecord
supports dvd writing, is released under the GPL, and is actively supported
by him.
No, the problem is that some people rom Debian stared to attack the project ~ 3
years ago and spread a lot of FUD against the cdrtools project.
Wodim is definitely _not_ a rewrite. Wodim is just an old version that added
some nasty bugs. Note: Being an old version does not only apply to cdrecord
but even more to mkisofs.
If you look at the Ubuntu bug tracking system (Ubuntu started to support the
original software after they found _many_ bugs in the fork), you will see that
the fork has ~ 30 verified bugs while there is no known verified bug for the
original software.
Also note that the defensive programming in the original results in no problems
with the current driver changes in Linux while suse useer e.g. currently report
that wodim does not work at all because os "libata".
