Does anyone have any views on whether I should go for mbox, maildir or

What matters is to be consistent. I use maildir, and recommend it.
the problem with maildir AFAIK is that if, for some reason the OP needs
to migrate to a different mail client at some stage in the future
(maildir is only used by KMail?), it is VERY difficult (or at least
quite laborious) to migrate mail from maildir to any other format - I
know, I've been there....
Not to mention that one MUA's idea of maildir may *not* be the same as
that of another MUA. In particular some MUAs will use real
directories for a hierarchy of maildirs whereas others will use '.'
delimiters to indicate folders in a maildir hierarchy.
