One of the niggles of making a PVR box out of mini-itx kit is the
infra-red
remote control. It looks like you either have to have a dongle thingy
hanging off a USB port or literally cut metal and knock-up your own
circuit
to interface the detector with a serial port. However the Mac mini has
its
own IR remote which is a big plus. You don't know if it will work with
lirc
do you?
DVB cards generally include a remote, but the Linux drivers are mostly
pretty poor in terms of response and debounce. I don't see much sense in
investing in an analogue TV card these days unless you want to record
pay channels via your Sky/cable box and then you have to make sure the
latter is on the desired channel at the right time.
But the IR detector is still usually a dongle which I think looks poor,
actually I'm trying to sell "this will look really good in our living room"
to my SO and bits hanging off the box just won't do! Also, as you say, the
driver support can be poor or even non-existent, at least that's what I've
found in doing my research, non of this knowledge comes from practical
experience.
I only want to record freeview so I'm not in the market for an analogue
receiver, but since my last post I realised that you can't get a DVB card
into the mac mini so it would have to be one of the external USB types so
I'm back to the problem described above - doh!
