The core 2 duo machines are just about fast enough to do 1080p video
playback too, a little jerky but the sound is in sync, which it wasn't
on the core duo machines. Not that I'm interested in that though,
just playing with it.
The previous machines made good vmware servers BTW, much quicker than
my P4 3GHz. The discs aren't too shabby speed-wise, from previous
experience with laptop-type disc I thought they'd be slow, but SATA
seems to have sorted that out.
If you do get one, try to make sure you get all the RAM you want
pre-installed, getting into the machines is hard, they're not designed
to be pulled apart without special tools.
Thanks Ian - I've just had a look at the Applestore website and they do look
nice.
One of the niggles of making a PVR box out of mini-itx kit is the infra-red
remote control. It looks like you either have to have a dongle thingy
hanging off a USB port or literally cut metal and knock-up your own circuit
to interface the detector with a serial port. However the Mac mini has its
own IR remote which is a big plus. You don't know if it will work with lirc
do you?
