try purging both packages first (to remove all historic configs) with
"aptitude purge [pkg name]"

Then re-install 6 and see if it works. If not, you probably had some
custom config that apt knew nothing about. Check /etc/alternatives for
proper symlinks.

Reinstalling 6 didn't work, but I recreated the symlinks
in /etc/alternatives to point to the correct place and (fingers crossed)
all is working again.
