Well, I can see the fc6Home machine in Windows "My Network Places" but I
can't get into the folders on fc6Home because I "don't have permission"
and "the network path was not found". I've checked permissions for the
folders I allowed "arcturus" on fc6Home for the Samba Server and they
are Read/Write and arcturus is an allowed user. Any ideas?
BTW - I briefly had access to the root directory from XP and was able to
firtle around the directories. Unwise, I hear you say so I've deleted it
from permitted places. But it's odd that I could access that but not
others that seem configured the same way. Something to do with
addressing?

Login went all right, password and all.

Is the login you used on XP the owner of the Linux user that forms the
shared disk?

What about the guest user?

If checking these points doesn't help, run "testparm" in a terminal
window and post its output here starting with the "[global]" line.
testparm should run OK under any user.

Okay, there's a couple of things I've noticed about the arrangement that
seem pertininent to the matter (and thanks again for your help, I think
I'm nearly there)...

I can look at everything on the XP box from fc6... every file and folder
on both hard drives I have installed there. I set both hard drives to
share, which is a decision I will revise in due course. I also have a
"Shared Docs" folder that I can write to from fc6 (in fact that's how I
copied the Testparm results over).

Secondly, in the "Network" folder on fc6 I can see both computers - XP
(named arcturus) and fc6 (named fc6Home). When I look at fc6Home I see
the three folders I have given permission to (or thought I had!), but
when I.. right click>Properties>permissions.. it says "permissions could
not be determined".

Nextly, when I logged onto fc6 this evening I got the warning "Users
$Home/dmrc file is being ignored. This pervents the default session and
language from being saved. File should be owned by user and have 644
permissions. Users $Home directory must be owned by user and not
writable by other users".

Lastly, here's the result of testparm...

"Load smb config files from /etc/samba/smb.conf
Processing section "[homes]"
Processing section "[printers]"
Processing section "[panawe]"
Processing section "[home]"
Processing section "[net]"
Loaded services file OK.

[global]
workgroup = MSHOME
server string = Samba Server
guest account = arcturus
username map = /etc/samba/smbusers

max log size = 50

Clear as mud, no?
