Screen reset annoyance, DVI-D only

Hi Folks,
I'm running Ubuntu 7.04 on an IBM Netvista 8318. I had quite a time
getting a graphics card to work: the onboard Intel 845G chipset caused
system hangs, as did a Radeon 9250. No problems with a Matrox G200.
I recently got the chance of a Radeon 7000 and since it seemed to get
the thumbs up, thought I'd give it a go. All seems well - I'm using
the "radeon" driver and it hasn't done anything nasty yet.
So I thought I'd be adventurous and try using DVI-D to connect it to
my monitor (Hyundai L72D) instead of boring old analogue. Switched
off, changed wire, switched on, all fine ...
.... except. Whenever I close or minimise a window in Thunderbird, the
screen resets - goes completely blank for about a second, then comes
back to live. Firefox doesn't do this. Some openoffice.org windows do,
some don't. Terminal windows don't.
It makes the system unusably irritating, so I am back to VGA. Has
anyone got any idea why this might be happening? From xorg.conf:
Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Radeon 7000"
Driver "radeon"
BusID "PCI:2:1:0"
Option "UseFBDev" "True"
EndSection
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Generic Monitor"
Option "DPMS"
EndSection
Yours in bafflement,
Ian
