Thanks, have skimmed that thread but I don't see an answer to my problem. I think that was on different hardware.
I have noticed one thing that might be a factor.
If X starts before the monitor is turned on, I get less options for screen resolution.
I configured it to always restart the X-window server after a logout, and I try and make sure not to turn the VDU off until after the login screen has refreshed and reset itself.
I think that maybe the x-server is trying a pnp conversation of some sort through the graphics card to the monitor when the server initialises, and if the monitor isn't responding, assumes some defaults that may be less than you want.
