Almost all of the USB adapters have noisy input circuitry. I have a
Terratec Aureon 5.1 USB MkII. One channel of the line in is noisy
(about -60dBFS), so I use the optical digital in.
It works with USB 1.1 on my laptop (Thinkpad T30) and it's bus powered.
If you have an outboard A/D converter, I'd suggest using that to get
the signal into the digital domain. I've used Minidisc decks for that,
and latterly a Behringer Ultramatch Pro 24/96.
I'll just note that I've used my video camera running on battery for
exactly that purpose. It is a Sony MiniDV camera and it records
uncompressed 16 bit stereo sound at 48 kHz. You then replay the tape
into your linux box afterwards via firewire. The result on CD sounded
fine to my non-audiophile ears! (I used sox polyphase to resample it
to 44.1 kHz). I did have a 13 GB temporary file though ;-)
