I vaguely heard something this morning on the radio (today program
before 7am but I can't give a better time than that) about Barclays
sending "card readers to scramble your pin" to make online banking
more secure.

Presumably, whatever they're doing will require a driver that will
only be provided for vista and OSX. :-(

Well, assuming it is something like the card reader the Dutch banks here supply, then it is a standalone unit that you can put in your pocket.

Basically, when you go to log on online, you put your card in the reader, enter your PIN, then after you enter your card details the website gives you an 8-digit code that you enter into the reader which then returns a 6-digit code to enter into the website. It actually works quite well and the best bit is, it is totally OS independent so no "Windows only" rubbish!
