Hi Nick,
thanks for the reply. Unfortunately my problem is a bit more
complicated :-( I have an HP 2600N which doesn't support Postscript, it
has the zjstream protocol. To print to it I am using foo2hp downloaded
from the author's website http://foo2hp.rkkda.com/
....snips...
So my problem is the rendering of colour even before it reaches the
printer - I guess Firefox and Gthumb (which both produce bad colour
results) are generating an intermediate postscript file which the foo2hp
script then manipulates. Somehow I need to tell those programs to do a
better job. So I was guessing that somewhere in gconf2 I can set a
resolution and dithering behaviour for Gnome desktop.

Okay - I understand better now, but I've not looked that deeply
into printing. I use my Gnome programs under KDE, and mostly it
All Just Works. Sometimes I do have to go in and select the correct
printer in the app's own dialogue. Firefox, for instance, is currently
offering me three printers each with different sets of driver options:
Deskjet/Postcript, Deskjet/CUPS and Default/Postscript.

In the last one I can type in my own commands (currently contains
lpr ${MOZ_PRINTER_NAME:+-P"$MOZ_PRINTER_NAME"}
) I'm sure you've found that already ! I don't know how to make it
the default for all apps though.
