Looking at previous log dumps this was happening before I did the
work, but I didn't notice it until now (the system is in a cupboard
and has been running from 2005).

It most certainly could. However, it's difficult to tell the severity; I've
got a Sony laptop that's been doing that for over five years, but because I
only use it as an X terminal, I've never made the effort to replace the
drive. On the other hand, whenever it starts to happen on one of my server
drives, I replace it sharpish.
It was a server machine and its gone away now (new drive).
