Thanks for your suggestions!

To answer your questions: I did an upgrade and a full install of SuSE
9.2 a few years back (going from 8.2), and I had huge problems getting
my printer and scanner to work again. In fact, I gave up after a while
and went back to 8.2. I couldn't find a fix despite many hours
searching! So, I'm happy with 8.2

It sounds deceptively easy to go via the Linux/broadband route (!)
.....in fact, I don't even know if my machine has an ethernet card. I
got it second hand and haven't tinkered around in the casing. I suppose
Yast will tell me...?

Or... you could just take a peek around the back and look for the
classic tell tale sign (an RJ45 socket :-).

Forgive my ignorance, but isn't RJ45 a "standard" telephone socket
connector? I know there is at least one
because my external modem is plugged into it :)

It shouldn't be, I hope! The american telephone socket as used by
modems is actually an RJ11 socket.
