For a lighter distro Damn Small Linux would be ideal, since it is also
Debian based. You can run it from a CD or do an HD install. You can turn
it into a standard Debian system by installing various stuff over the net.
Is it possible to install linux to a Compact Flash card, mounted on an
existing linux system? The card is going to be plugged into a CF-IDE
converter in a mini-ITX system which will be used purely as an X terminal,
so it needs X, ESD for sound and that's about it.
Have a look at the DSL website, http://www/damnsmalllinux.org - there's
lots of stuff about installing on flash cards, pendrives etc. there.
Re: compact distro ... performance should be reasonable if you choose a single coloured desktop... 'downgrade' KDE to run on limited hardware, but I'm no KDE expert....
