I like Slackware. Some of the more newbie-friendly
distributions like Ubuntu, Mepis and Mandriva
might be easier for a beginner.
You can have a dual-boot Windows/Linux system. This would
allow you to use your existing Windows software. You can
also run some Windows software under Wine.
