The guest os is connected to the internet through a serial port. It's in
the vmware options to attach a serial port (using ppp dialup).
Then no, the Linux packet filter is not involved. The packets don't go
through the host network stack at all. It's the serial port which is
shared from the host to the guest, the host doesn't get involved in what
goes over it.
I believe the same is true if the network card is shared in bridged mode,
this operates at the MAC layer and the packets are simply passed to and
from VMware and the NIC. I think the packet filter is used in NAT mode but
would want to test it to be certain. In NAT mode there is a visible
interface on the host with an IP address.
