Hi,
When I run neat (or system-config-network - whatever FC call it this
week), it needs me to enter a default gateway address and subnet mask.
Usually, a router will have the IP address 192.168.0.1 on the LAN side
Is the subnet mask what the router expects or what my ISP expects
(255.255.248.0 for the ISP)
On my setup it is 255.255.255.0
and what is my default gateway address
(the router is giving the value 82.42.48.1)?
That will be the WAN side IP address, your gateway is the lan side IP of
the router - most likely 192.168.0.1
I've been reliably told by some Windows people
ROFL
that if I set my router
to accept values between 192.168.2.100 and 179 and set my machines at
values above 179 that it will be way more reliable in terms of
dropping faster than a whores knickers!
So you set your router up to *accept* a range of addresses, then present
it with something outside the range, are you sure these Windows experts
know what they are talking about?
Generally, you can choose almost any address within the subnet, but I'm
a simple soul, so I use 192.168.0.n where n > 1
Since we are talking static IP, you do should probably either disable
the DHCP server in your router or set it to *offer* addresses outside
of the range you are using.
You will also want to set the default nameserver(s). Some people use the
gateway as their default DNS server lan side, others just use their
ISP's nameservers.
