I have heard that as part of its checks the DRM needs to be on a device
with internet access (presumably checks / pings a BBC server).

Soon, however, MS DRM will be implemented on a TC platform (Trusted
Computing). This will refuse to authenticate if any software is present
that can not give the right "I will not copy this stream" guarantee.
Because Linux is open source, it will never be able to give this
guarantee.

This is the long-term deal that MS is offering to content providers:
"Work with our DRM (rather than, say, Apple's) and we will eventually
deliver a hardware-based solution (because Intel is in on this with us
too) that can, at last, prevent any of your content leaking out of our
software."

Have you got any links on that?

This all flies in the face of what Tessa Jowell says: 'The BBC
white paper sets out a unique solution, for a unique organisation, in a
unique set of circumstances - a genuine public service for all in the
digital age.'

The more I discover about this, the more contradictory the BBC's project
appears to be when set against its own PR and the statements coming out
of Whitehall.

You believe their own PR ?

I would be interested to see the definition of: 'public value test', bet
that hides a multitude of sins.
