I think it's called an iterative process, i.e. you keep doing it until it
works! I kept running 'make xconfig' and building kernel packages,
installing them, booting, reading logs and dmesg and .config and then
tweaking and eliminating things I didn't need, during which I think I
ticked a sub option which seems to be quite key. Anybody who has an R50e
Centrino is welcome to a copy of my .config.
End result is a quicker boot, instantaneous wireless access and a boot
menu 5 miles long - which I now need to prune!
