I'll tell you about the last machine I installed them both on; it was a mid
range desktop system I'd built for my gf's mother, who's not a techy. I
started the windows install first, and it fell straight over because it
couldn't see any hard disks - it turns out that the basic near ubiquitous
cheapo Silicon Image SATA controller is beyond even a brand new XP disc.
This meant that it would need a driver disk feeding to it, but not the
motherboard driver CD, oh no, that would be far too straight forward. It
wants a floppy. That meant finding a floppy, a floppy drive, and a second
Windows machine to run the driver floppy making prog from the CD on.
Honestly - who still uses floppies?! Ubuntu, on the other hand just
installed, no mess, no fuss.
There's more, and worse, but that can wait for another post.
