I find the package management in Debian and derivatives is pretty good.
If it says you can't mix some versions, it's almost always because those
versions wouldn't mix anyway. I can't speak too highly of backports.org,
which provides a selection of useful Sid packages regularly backported
to (nowadays) Sarge including, as it happens, libxxf86dga1.
Backports.org won't solve some sorts of problem, e.g. those where you
want to use C++ .debs compiled with Sid g++ and you have Sarge C++ libs,
in that case you have to rebuild the package. But that's a problem for
any distro and apt-get source && dpkg-buildpackage make it a pretty
small problem :)
