And people who do try to use it get put off by Linux users either going
into massive detail ("I just want to install the thing, not rewrite
it!") or saying "Read the F. manual" without saying /which/ manual or
admitting that perhaps the f. manual is not exactly perfect. A friend
of mine has just been flamed by one of the Gentoo developers for daring
to ask if anyone is willing to help (the manual is online, which is very
good except if something goes wrong part way through and you can't use
the computer to access it, which is what my friend was asking about).
Oh, that same Gentoo developer gave me instructions which would have
converted my whole machine to the 'testing' branch, when what I wanted
was instructions about testing one package (and didn't bother telling me
that her instructions would have messed up the whole machine).

In many ways the Linux advocates are their own worst enemy. They either
make claims which would put a double glazing salesman to shame ("it will
do everything you need!") or they insult the people they are trying to
convert by insulting anyone who dares to use Windows or say that Linux
isn't perfect.
