Ubuntu is the closest I have seen to a user friendly linux. It detected all
my stuff out of the box including my laptop wireless card. But the problem
still comes down to installing programs. Not programs from the
repositories, more specifically own downloaded programs. Download a program
then it decides it wants dependencies so you have to get them aswell. Can a
program not include all dependencies required? Opera needs OpenMotif for
plugins, is there any reason why they cannot include that in the program
setup?
They developed that Klik system for downloading and installing programs
effortlessly, unfortunately I have had a 100% failure rate with that method.
I imagine its still in testing stages and has a long way to go yet.
I also think it needs to shed its geeky image. After I started using linux
I suggested to my friends that they try it. A couple of them said they
couldn't as there were some windows programs they needed and the others all
said it was too geeky and complicated for them.
The open source community has done a huge amount to bring programs and
operating systems to people but I think it will be a long time before
Microsoft and Apple are concerned by its presence.
