Is it a GTK or GTK2 app? I had this problem recently when I hosed my
locales, exactly the same symptoms but it happened with Gimp and
GnuCash.
Run an xterm and enter the following;
export LANG=C
export LC_ALL=C
locale
(check that all the variables equal "C")
then run audacity from that xterm and see if it sorts it.
