Problem with HP Surestore40 dat drive & Symbios SCSI card

Hi,
I'm desperately trying to get the above drive/card working on an FC4 box
running kernel 2.6.14-1.1637_FC4, any help *much* appreciated as backup
plan B involves taking the server down, moving the tape drive back the
old Windows server, blah...
Googling produces lots of relevant stuff but no actual solution...
