machine failure?

hi all.

Earlier today one of my home boxes failed. I was unable to login remotely
via SSH and although Apache kept serving pages, the webmail application
kept reporting a failure to connect to the IMAP service. When I got home,
it wasn't allowing logins at the console either (hung after entering
username prior to password prompt). The following is in /var/log/messages:

Anyone offer any insight as to what might have happened here?

Many thanks!
