Yes - the ALSA module snd-es1938 would only work when loaded via modprobe.
When built into the kernel there were no error message but in addition there
was no sound! Took me ages to find the cure :-(.
The only thing that made me think of loading the module was that ALSA had
spent a long time being out of the kernel tree, don't know why this should
make any difference but I was grasping at straws at the time.
