You've overflowed an apt internal limit. Add to /etc/apt/apt.conf the line
APT::Cache-Limit 33554432
(that's a 32Mb cache).
The default, from the apt source, seems to be 12Mb.
This is all workaround code breaking: hopefully eventually the code can
go away entirely or changed to check dynamically, as it should be
unnecessary on systems running 2.4 kernels or above.
