In KDE RIGHT click any blank area on the destop and a menu will pop up. The
bootom entry should be Log off yourusername. Left click it and follow the
instructions.

Mandrake has a control center a bit like windows. Part of it is an online
software upgrader. Run this and it will check your installation against the
latest version and give you a list of progs it can upgrade. Slect the ones
you want and let it do its stuff. No need to uninstall anything but you
will need to reboot if you upgrade KDE.

No, see above.

You need to be the root use to do this - you did make a not of the root
password when you did the installation. To use chmod, start a terminal and
type su (ask to go to superuser mode). It will ask for the (root) password.
Put this in then you can do chmod. When you have done doing root stuff type
exit in the console and you will go back to your regular user shell.

Linux is great fun and you are never too old to learn. I think there is even
a web site dedicated to linux newbies. A google search for Linux Newbie
will get you a load of hits.
Good Luck and welcome to the free world.
