The second attempt went very well, it just worked. With a Windows background I am used to installing the OS!
I reinstalled Debian several times, then Mandrake (as it was then), then when I found that Mandrake RPMs are not quite the same as Red Hat RPM's I went back to Debian and it's been that for years.
With experience, you learn how to keep the same installation going rather than wipe the disk and start again.
Debian is particularly good in that regard. You can upgrade from one official stable release to the next and it does it properly.
WRT an earlier remark about apt:
apt-cache <string>
will search the entire package repository for package descriptions matching the string
apt-cache <package-name> will tell you more about the package
apt-get install <packages> (obvious, also with -remove switch and several others, see man page)
I must admit the Gnome desktop is nice, I am using knode for news, I don't know if there is a Gnome equivalent but knode seems very good.
I don't know knode but I'm using Thunderbird for news and that seems pretty OK.
