Try a different mic. The quality of cheap mics varies considerably.
If no joy, you could try a preamp between mic and card, but you really
need a variable gain one to prevent overlaoding the soundcard input.
A google on linux sound recording will bring lots of hits I am sure as
this topic has been covered before.
