I did that. I have a 56k internal modem. So I installed the WinXP
fax services; cabled the modem to the phone socket; and left the
program running, set to "receive automatically after two rings".

Surprisingly it worked. But I won't know how much it cost until I
get the bill.

Nothing I should think.
Unless you have to pay your provider to receive incoming calls.

Right. But they don't come through the ISP. They are direct-dial to my
home number. And so they are subject to BT costings; which is zero for
incoming calls.

Another thing. With the WinXP fax service installed, you don't need to
load the program to monitor incoming stuff. It becomes part of the
system services, and loads at start-up.

The only draw-back is having to keep the old 56k modem connected.

That and when your Aunty Edith rings you, she gets greeted (after two rings) by a squealing/squawking modem. :-)

Only if you set it to answer automatically. Mine is connected at the moment, and if I don't choose to click the popup invitation to answer it as an incoming fax, I just pick up the phone. I can be surprisingly useful to be able to send faxes this way too.

I also have a fax-to-email facility which is provided at no extra cost through my ISP package. Senders pay a small premium - it's an 0870 number. There are a number of independent providers too; you either pay a subscription or may lose the number if you don't get enough faxes!

This is the only the second time in about three years that I've met someone who insists on fax. I'm always sending documents back and forth around the wires. I just scan them in; far more convenient. And others do the same sending to me.

Are there still many fax machines being used?
