I've seen that problem with bad mouse mats. Try it on another; or a
different surface.

I was about to say that, they don't like patterned surfaces..

Damn nuisance trying to use an optical mouse when I'm staying in hotels
where they kindly provide a desk with a glass topped table. I often end up
having to use pages from the guest services folder as a mousemat so I can
get the mouse to behave itself.


Any reflective surface will interfere with the workings; or, rather, any degree of reflected light back up into the mouse. And that will include some commercially available mats.
Here my optical mouse works fine on the mat, but just move it to the polished desk surface and it doesn't.
