A customer wants to use the Archive feature (File | Archive) of Outlook
2007 to move all email older than a certain date from folder in his
personal PST (eg outlook.pst) to his archive PST (eg archive.pst).

When I tried it, I highlighted "Inbox" in Personal, did File | Archive
and selected "This folder and all subfolders". I set the cutoff date to
some time in December 2007. I got status messages saying that it was
processing each subfolder below Inbox, but all that happened was that
corresponding *empty* folders were created below Inbox in the Archive
PST - no emails, even those older than the cutoff date, were moved
across.

Is there something extremely obvious that I am forgetting to do?

Hi Martin,

If those emails have been imported from an older version, the problem
will likely be that Outlook archiving works from the 'modified' file
datestamp,
so it's not seeing their 'received' date! Unbelieveable, I know..
The workaround is to create an Outlook rule to send old messages to the
archive, based on their received date. You will only need to do this once
as all new emails will have the correct 'modified' attribute.

At least this is what I think is the problem..

Could well be. They were imported from OE6 to Windows Mail and then from
there to Outlook (for some reason, Outlook didn;t seem to support import
straight from OE .dbx files).

It sounds plausible that it could be using a date other than the received
date of each message.

Rules sound like a good idea. Shame it woudl be necessary to do a separate
rule for each folder - and customer has lots and lots of folders :-(
